Helping
Blue overalls and scuffed tennis shoes,
One of your hats
Shoved on my head
And the scent of fall in the air,
Proud to be "helping" you.
Yellow leaves swirled
'Round and 'round
As I stood by the total station,
Steadying the tri-pod,
Helping,
Or so I thought.
It must have taken much longer
When your daughter
Was "working" as your crew.
A smile wider than the steps I took
Covered my face
As I hauled equipment back and forth.
Oh so proud
Of the cold sweet treat
I'd receive at the end of the job,
But even prouder of being with you.
I relished the talks
That we shared in the truck,
Small things, big things,
Your knowledge probed,
Or simply listening the radio,
Tuned in to our favorite station.
I thought that I was helping you,
Those Saturdays years ago,
But now I know
That you helped me,
By showing me your world.
