'Icarus' by Matisse. I played with the painting in Photoshop a bit. :-) Click here to see the original.

Icarus

I saw him in the clouds tonight,
Tumbling, plunging
Ever downward,
Falling, toppling
Head over trembling heels,
Face frozen in eternal fear,
Heart paralyzed
In inevitable dread.

Sweat and tears
Mix with melted wax,
As the terrified cloud figure nosedives,
Crying, begging, pleading,
Screaming for the deaf gods to save him,
Ever falling in the sky.

Meagan's note: For those of you are not familar with Greek myths and legends, "Icarus" is based on the Greek myth that a man named Daedalus and his son Icarus were imprisoned by the King Minos on Crete. Daedalus took wax and feathers and formed them into two sets of wings to enable him and his son to escape. He warned Icarus to fly in midair, not near the water lest the spray dampen the feathers nor too near the son least the wax melt. However, Icarus, being drunk with the pleasure of flying, forgot his father's warning and soared higher and higher. Soon, the wax began to melt, destroying the wings and Icarus began to fall. Daedalus watched helplessly as Icarus fell into the ocean and drowned.
