'Celebration' by Gail Genine Butler

Joy of Life

I know I should be sleeping,
But a persistent twinkle remains in my eyes,
Cheerfully refusing to be subdued.
The corners of my mouth cannot be solemn
And my feet will not stay still.
Kicking off the covers,
They dance about the room
And I give in to this inescapable attitude,
Throwing back my head,
Laughing and drinking in the world’s wondrous beauty.
My hands, unprompted,
Reach toward Heaven.

I am joyful just to be alive.
