Polite Question
"How are you?" A question considered polite, But in reality, Bearing more resemblance to a loaded gun, For it requires on to bare one's soul and personal life And allow a stranger access to one's innermost feelings Or give a civil lie and say, "Good" And leave it at that. The inquiry comes easily, For the initiator does not really expect a sincere answer, But I, I struggle with my response, For I know what part I have been given, An assigned role to complete the morning custom with a "Fine, how are you?" But is it not also my duty to be truthful? To be honest and admit that My life is not perfect And that just this morning I wept? But in the end, Civility wins So I smile courteously saying, "Good." And continue living the lie.
